North Mauritius

Northern Mauritius has many highly popular locations such as  Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches and Pamplemousses, and the largest beach on the island, Mon Choisy.  There are some great holiday resorts along the northern coastline. From Port Louis there are several bus services that go to the popular regions in the North.

A highly popular destination for tourists is the pleasant village of Pamplemousses which boasts the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens – one of the prime tourist hot spots within Mauritius. There are some awesome variety of trees, flowers and foliage on display here – look out for the wonderful lily filled pond, a spectacular sight and possibly the most stunning feature of the gardens.

Another highly visited northern Mauritius destination is the cane-swept lands of Grand Gaube – a wonderful little fishing town which has benefited from tourism development.

La Nicolière is a lake somewhat higher than the northern plains, and offers very beautiful views of the northern region with its many sugarcane fields.

Pereybere also boasts a stretch of boutiques selling everything from clothing and shoes to memorable souvenirs.

One of the most northern points of Mauritius is Cap Malheureux – while there are some hotels in this region, it’s important to note that the coastline in this region is notably more rocky than in other destinations.

Trou Aux Biches
It’s one of Mauritius’s most happening and popular areas, and with a multitude of quality resorts and a superb range of activities you can see why. Trou Aux Biches is particularly good as far as water sports is concerned – there’s a lot to do including diving, snorkelling, parasailing, water skiing and more.

Grand Baie – The Tourism Capital Of Mauritius Featuring Some Splendid Holiday Resorts
Grand Bay (or Grand Baie) is the focal point of the north, a modern beach resort with many shops and hotels.  Considered one of the main nightlife areas, there are a number of restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
Tourism in Grand Baie has simply exploded over the past few years and there are a huge number of resorts, restaurants and people concentrated in this Northern region of Mauritius.   Similar to Trou Aux Biches, Grand Baie is well known for the wealth of water sports on offer.

If you can then take a ride in one of the “mini yellow submarines” (semisubmersibles) which takes you deep into the waters where you can view the coral and marine life in a very unique way. This is a great experience but expect to pay up to $100 per ticked for an hours ride. As you may expect, there are the usual offerings of Deep Sea Fishing and Diving. You can even take an undersea walk – offered on Royal Rd where you amble along the ocean floor sporting a diving helmet. Great experience if you have the nerve!

The beaches and lagoons in the area are sheltered, but a sweatshirt or warm top is recommended for the winter evenings of June to September. Grand Bay gets very hot and humid in the summer.

If you do decide to stay in Grand Baie for your Mauritius holiday then there is no shortage of restaurants to eat at, or things to see and do. Grand Baie is within easy reach of the capital of Port Louis (buses are available daily and you can hire a taxi any time of day to take you there and back).
