Weddings in Mauritius

Mauritius is rated the 4th most popular Wedding Destination by Kuoni Travel, the out and out specialists in arranging exotic wedding and honeymoon holidays.

The varied landscape, good quality hotels with exquisite service, along with the stunning beaches, make Mauritius an excellent place for a luxurious wedding and holiday.

Who would a Mauritius wedding suit? Well, almost everyone who loves the sun and the beach!

Mauritius is perfect for couples looking to escape a chilly European winter for an exotic location. It’s great for small, informal weddings, yet the island also caters to larger groups, like couples who want to share their special day with family and friends.

On the one hand there are venues catering to those seeking a timeless, classic wedding in an exotic location; on the other, it’s the ideal place for those who want to break from tradition and enjoy a wedding that will be truly memorable both for them and family and friends who join them. In Mauritius you can immerse yourself in local cultural wedding rituals or simply choose a unique beautiful setting to exchange your vows.

The best time to get hitched? May to October.

Fancy a catamaran Wedding? This unique wedding is offered to Kuoni guests, staying at any hotel on Mauritius. Marry on board before sailing off on a romantic trip on the beautiful clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean with the stunning Mauritius coastline in view all the way. (Catamaran weddings available February to November).

Is a wedding abroad all that practical?

Weddings everywhere are becoming increasingly expensive, and when one considers that many hotels in Mauritius offer free or very affordable wedding packages, combining your wedding with your honeymoon can even save you money! And when you choose professionals such as Kuoni to take care of the details, there’s very little organising for you to do.

For those who are not new to marriage and are happy to go with something less formal with less resultant organisation, an island wedding and honeymoon offers the ideal solution.

What about the guests?

For most of us getting married abroad obviously means a reduced guest list. Focus on your special loved ones – and convince your close friends they should have a holiday at the same time (preferably in a different hotel …)! And, what stops you from having a “wedding party” for a larger circle of friends when you return home?

Some points to consider when planning a wedding in Mauritius:

  • If the Bride to be has been divorced for less than ten months at the time of the wedding, she will have to have a pregnancy test in a resort. The wedding will be conducted using the Bride’s maiden name
  • Book early for your favourite choice of wedding date and location – especially if you are thinking of getting married in peak season
  • Find out everything you can about the various hotel wedding packages – and their special offers
  • Buy your wedding attire to match your wedding abroad climate
  • Arrange to video the wedding. This is the best way to appease family and friends who have been left at home
  • Expect a simple ceremony. It will be quick and informal
  • Make sure your insurance policy covers you for the value of your wedding and engagement rings
  • If you are going to change your passport into your married name make sure that all documents and booking details are all in the same name and not a mixture of maiden and married name as this could result in refusal entry into the country
  • Pack all the original copies of your required documents, you cannot get married without them! If you are changing your passport into your married name ensure you leave plenty of time for your passport to be processed and sent back to you.
  • Ensure you have suitable luggage carriers for your wedding attire and that you understand the airline’s rules concerning baggage allowances.
  • Consider vouchers as an alternative for a gift list. Kuoni Travel, for instance, offer the option for guests to buy vouchers for your honeymoon which you can use either against the booking itself or maybe use them for room or flight upgrades.

Upon arrival:

  • Hang your dress in a steamy bathroom to minimise creases
  • Make friends with the hotel’s Wedding Coordinator
  • Go easy on the sunbathing. You don’t want to look sunburnt in your pictures.
